Reverse overseas shopping will become a new track for cross-border e-commerce in 2026, and the tens of billions of blue ocean markets will release growth dividends

Many people are familiar with “overseas shopping,” which simply means domestic consumers purchase overseas goods. Reverse overseas shopping is just the opposite: it is a new cross-border e-commerce model in which overseas users purchase domestic products on Chinese e-commerce platforms and then ship them to all parts of the world through purchasing agents, consolidation, cross-border direct mail, etc.
Currently, reverse overseas shopping has a wide range of user groups. In addition to overseas students and overseas Chinese, more and more local young people in Europe, America, Southeast Asia, and the Middle East have begun to purchase Chinese goods in bulk. The procurement channels mainly rely on mature domestic e-commerce platforms such as Taobao, 1688, and JD.com, and then complete contract fulfillment through cross-border logistics.

The core of the rapid rise of reverse overseas shopping is the stacking of three industry dividends: an extremely mature domestic supply chain, outstanding product cost-effectiveness, and full category coverage, coupled with the rigid consumption of overseas Chinese, global cross-border payments, and the increasingly perfect international logistics system, which has significantly lowered the threshold for domestic products to go overseas.

Reverse overseas shopping full-link performance diagram

At present, the mainstream business models of reverse overseas shopping are divided into three categories, which are suitable for different users and operation scenarios. The profit margin and operating difficulty are greatly different:

1. Platform direct purchase and direct mail model
Represented by Temu, Shein, TikTok Shop, and Alibaba International Station, overseas users place orders directly on the overseas platform, and the platform uniformly prepares goods and ships directly overseas.
It is characterized by large volume and large traffic, but the platform is severely involved, and sellers make meager profits, mainly relying on traffic volume to make money.

2. Chinese purchasing agency + container shipping model (high gross profit core model)
Typical representatives are Chinese overseas platforms such as Pandabuy and Taocarts.
Users independently purchase domestic products from multiple platforms and send them to domestic consolidation warehouses. The platform completes collection, consolidation, reinforcement, and transshipment before sending them overseas.
This is currently the most profitable model for reverse overseas shopping. The industry’s comprehensive gross profit can reach 30%-50%, which is much higher than the average gross profit of traditional cross-border e-commerce of less than 8%. It is also the mainstream direction for small and medium-sized entrepreneurs to enter the industry in the past two years.

3. Independent station API procurement model
Connect with Taobao and 1688 supply systems through technical interfaces to build an independent overseas site to achieve one-click procurement, intelligent consolidation, and automatic contract fulfillment.
Mainly serving overseas small and medium-sized buyers and individual high-end users, focusing on differentiated and refined services, avoiding the low-price intrusion of large platforms.

From a consumer point of view, the core customer groups of reverse overseas shopping are divided into three categories: 60 million+ overseas Chinese groups are the most stable basic market, focusing on domestic special needs products, including snacks, seasonings, Chinese medicinal materials, Chinese kitchenware, national cultural and creative products, etc., with extremely high repurchase rates; the global international student group prefers clothing, affordable beauty,
Compared with overseas prices for cost-effective items such as 3C accessories and home gadgets, the price advantage of domestic products is extremely obvious; young people in Europe, America, and Southeast Asia are keen on smart homes, TWS headsets, original fashion brands, Hanfu, and niche design items. The speed of style updates and price advantages of China’s supply chain are unmatched by overseas local brands.

2023-2026 global reverse overseas shopping market scale growth trend

Public industry data shows that China’s overall cross-border e-commerce export scale will reach 2.63 trillion yuan in 2023, of which reverse overseas shopping accounts for about 38%, becoming the core growth pole of cross-border exports.
Industry forecast data shows that the global reverse overseas shopping market will exceed US$18.75 billion in 2026, with the annual compound growth rate remaining stable at more than 15%.
Platforms represented by Temu, Shein, TikTok Shop, and Pandabuy have maintained explosive growth of 100%–300% in order volume and user downloads in the past two years, and track dividends continue to be released.

Supply chain and logistics advantages are the core confidence for domestic products to go overseas: relying on Taobao and 1688’s domestic mature supply systems, product prices are 30%–80% lower than overseas, and styles are iterated very quickly. New products can be released weekly in categories such as clothing and home furnishings, completely crushing overseas local supply chains.
The current mainstream logistics solutions include three categories: air delivery has a delivery time of 7-15 days and a unit price of 40-60 yuan/kg, which is suitable for urgent orders and high-value small items; sea-delivery combined mail has a delivery time of 30-45 days and a unit price of 23-30 yuan/kg, which is the mainstream choice for affordable orders. The overseas warehouse model continues to expand in Europe, America and Southeast Asia, and the time limit is compressed to 3-7 days, and the overall logistics cost is reduced by 20%.
In terms of customs clearance, relying on the cross-border e-commerce 9610/9710/9810 standardized customs clearance model, the industry’s comprehensive tax rate is stable at around 9.1%, of which small orders under US$800 in the US market can enjoy tax exemption policies.

There are also many core pain points in the current industry: the low-price involution of leading platforms is serious, and comprehensive platforms such as Temu are seizing the market at extremely low prices. A large number of small and medium-sized sellers have net profit margins of less than 5% and can only rely on massive sales to maintain operations. Without differentiated advantages, they are easily eliminated; global compliance risks continue to escalate, and tariffs, digital taxes, and carbon tariff policies in European and American countries continue to tighten. At the same time, intellectual property infringement and product compliance review have become increasingly stringent.
, the compliance costs of small and medium-sized players have increased significantly, and the era of extensive operations has completely ended; the stability of cross-border logistics is insufficient, and problems such as warehouse explosions, time delays, lost and damaged items are common during peak logistics seasons, and logistics costs in remote areas remain high, directly affecting user experience and merchant profits; the service system is fragmented, multi-platform orders cannot be managed in a unified manner, machine translation is not accurate enough, and multi-lingual customer service does not respond in a timely manner, which are core shortcomings that restrict refined operations.

Looking forward to 2026-2030, the reverse overseas shopping industry will undergo a complete reshuffle and upgrade: the market level will move from the Chinese niche circle to the global mainstream consumer market. In the future, young local users in Europe, America, and Southeast Asia will become the main consumers.
Yayi relies on the RCEP policy dividend growth rate of more than 25%, which is the fastest growing blue ocean area at present; AI empowerment + full-link integration at the model level has become standard, and technologies such as AI intelligent product selection, fully automatic multi-language translation, and intelligent customer service will significantly reduce manual operations.
Cost, one-stop closed-loop services that integrate the entire process of purchasing, warehousing, consolidating, customs clearance, and terminal distribution will become mainstream; the product level will completely move away from low prices and volume, and move towards high added value brands, with high value-added products such as smart homes, new energy accessories, drones, national fashion clothing, and sports brands becoming the main force in exports; standardization at the policy level will become the bottom line for industry survival, and compliance operations will become standard; in terms of competition, Chinese platforms will continue to dominate the global track, and overseas giants will not be able to shake the industry status of Chinese platforms in the short term.

In general, the outbreak of reverse overseas shopping is not a short-term trend, but the inevitable result of the three long-term dividends of China’s supply chain advantages, global cost-effective consumer demand, and mature cross-border digital infrastructure. In the future, it will become one of the most core and most potential channels for domestic products to go overseas, and continue to reshape the competitive landscape of global small and medium-sized cross-border e-commerce.
