Customs statistics show that in the first four months of 2026, the country’s cumulative exports of construction machinery to Africa increased by 59% year-on-year. Among them, Hunan Province’s construction machinery exports to Africa in the first five months alone reached 2.55 billion yuan, a year-on-year surge of 85.2%. Africa has become the core market with the fastest growth for China’s high-end equipment overseas.
This land with an annual infrastructure investment of US$130 billion to US$170 billion and a dependence of over 90% on the import of engineering equipment has recently welcomed a new major entrant: On June 22, Taizhong South Africa Co., Ltd. was unveiled in Johannesburg, South Africa. This is the first time that a leading heavy industry leader in Shanxi Province has established a formal regional operating entity in Africa, marking Taizhong’s official shift from indirect radiation in the African market to direct local operations.
The original pattern of China’s construction machinery African track is stable
Before Taizhong, the “African Story” of China’s construction machinery had been written by leading players such as Sany Heavy Industry, Xugong Group, and Zoomlion for more than ten years.
Sany Heavy Industry is the leader on this track.
It has established 24 subsidiaries in Africa, with a localization rate of over 60% of its employees and equipment covering more than 50 countries and regions.
From the first batch of motor graders exported to Morocco to the implementation of the “photovoltaic + energy storage + diesel power” microgrid project in Zambia, SANY has built a deep moat by leveraging its first-mover advantage and vast service network.

XCMG Group’s strategy focuses more on “localized manufacturing.”
It has deployed KD assembly plants in Nigeria and other West African countries to reduce costs and improve response efficiency through localized production.
XCMG’s heavy-duty trucks are the leading brand in the African market. In the first four months of 2026, China’s heavy-duty truck exports to Africa increased by 84.4% year-on-year. XCMG is one of the core growth contributors.
Zoomlion is the pursuer with the strongest momentum in recent years.
In April 2026, its Moroccan subsidiary just opened in Casablanca and is positioned as the core hub radiating North Africa.
In 2025, Zoomlion’s African regional revenue will increase by more than 157% year-on-year, an astonishing growth rate.

The common strategies of these three leading companies mainly focus on two points: first, to carry out customized product upgrades for the high temperature, high sand and dust, and heavy-load operating conditions in Africa to adapt to local usage scenarios; second, to shift from simply selling equipment to building a localized full life cycle service platform covering sales, services, and technology to enhance user stickiness.
The logic of the outbreak of African equipment market demand is clear
Behind the increasingly fierce competition on the track is the rapid expansion of the African equipment market. The three core driving forces driving the market explosion are very clear: mining demand, infrastructure gaps and inventory renewal.
First of all, driven by mining demand, Africa’s rich mineral resources are being intensively developed. Key projects such as iron ore and bauxite in Guinea, lithium mines in Mali, and copper and cobalt mines in the Democratic Republic of the Congo have started intensively, directly driving the procurement of equipment throughout the mining chain.
Industry surveys show that nearly 75% of Africa’s excavator demand comes from the mineral mining field.
The second is the infrastructure gap. Africa is experiencing the fastest urbanization process in the world, and the urbanization rate is expected to reach 52% by 2030. The huge gaps in housing, transportation, and municipal infrastructure provide long-term and stable demand support for construction machinery.
In addition, a large number of European and American second-hand equipment that entered the African market in the early years have entered the update cycle. However, with product reliability close to the international first-tier level and a selling price that is only 60%-70% of that of European and American brands, Chinese brands have formed an unparalleled cost-effective advantage and are accelerating replacement of the existing market.
The entry of new players opens up differentiated competition
Compared with the leading companies on the track, Taizhong is an out-and-out “new player”.
Prior to this, it mainly radiated indirectly to Africa through the Southeast Asian and Middle East markets, and had no public large-scale existing business.
The unveiling of the South African company is a key step for Taizhong from “indirect radiation” to “direct rooting”.
It is understood that Taizhong South Africa’s strategic positioning is very clear: with Johannesburg as the fulcrum, it will build an integrated marketing, technology and after-sales service platform covering all of Africa.
Judging from the main products such as engineering excavators, cranes, and forklifts signed with local customers at the site, Taizhong is targeting the strongest demand for infrastructure and mining equipment in Africa.
Industry insiders pointed out that localization capabilities are the core that determines the success or failure of companies in the African market.
The current track has been laid out, and all players are accelerating their layout.
For Taizhong, the arrival of the South African company means that it has officially entered the “arena” of Africa’s high-end equipment market from the “waiting seat”. Whether it can make up for its service shortcomings and accelerate overseas in a short period of time will determine its final position on the African high-end equipment map.
