UnionPay Mobile Pay: Leading a New Revolution in Global Payments with a “Chinese Solution”

On January 9, 2026, UnionPay International and Samsung Electronics jointly launched a unified payment service integrating card and QR code capabilities, with the rollout debuting in Hong Kong. By merging card and QR code technologies to break down global payment barriers—and leveraging its technological strengths, extensive acceptance network, and intelligent evolution—UnionPay Mobile Pay contributes "Chinese wisdom" to the global payment ecosystem.

On January 9, 2026, UnionPay International and Samsung Electronics jointly announced that they will launch a joint payment service based on the “card-code integration” mobile Pay solution, with Hong Kong becoming the first market to launch the service. At that time, overseas residents will only need to bind their UnionPay cards to their Samsung mobile phones to freely choose between contactless mobile payment or QR code payment. This business cooperation is seen as significant by the industry—marking that against the backdrop of increasingly diversified and fragmented global payment standards, Chinese payment brands, represented by UnionPay, are breaking down invisible payment barriers and leaping to the high end of the global value chain with a “Chinese solution” that combines inclusiveness and technological flexibility. Innovating “card-code integration” breaks down the “walls” of global payments. For a long time, an invisible yet highly impactful barrier has existed in the cross-border payment sector. In markets like Europe, Australia, and North America, decades of credit card culture have made users accustomed to “tap and pay.” In China and parts of Southeast Asia, however, QR code payments have become mainstream due to their low barriers to entry and high penetration rate. This regional differentiation in payment habits is not simply a matter of technological differences, but rather the result of a combination of industry trends, cost structures, and user behavior. For cross-border consumers, this differentiation in payment methods often translates into real costs—Chinese tourists instinctively reach for their payment code overseas, only to be prompted to “tap” it; overseas users in markets dominated by QR code payments also need to relearn payment logic. This fragmentation of payment methods is becoming a hidden bottleneck to global payment interoperability. Faced with this global pain point, UnionPay has not chosen a single technological alliance, but rather a more inclusive and adaptable “middle road”—”card-code integration.” The collaboration between UnionPay International and Samsung Electronics is a prime example of this strategy. Specifically, through technological integration, UnionPay seamlessly integrates two completely different payment methods—”card tapping” and “QR code scanning”—into a single mobile terminal entry point. For users, this means no need to mentally “switch” between different apps or payment habits; whether at a London Underground gate or a night market stall in China, a single mobile phone can handle it all. In today’s rapidly converging payment ecosystem, this “universal” tool, which bridges the gap in user experience and adapts to different global payment environments, constitutes UnionPay’s core competitive advantage over other international card organizations. It’s no longer a simple transplant of payment tools, but a deep understanding and embrace of global payment differences, showcasing the flexibility and wisdom of Chinese financial brands going global.

UnionPay Mobile Pay application scenario image

Technological support builds a competitive advantage.

If “card-code integration” solves the problem of global payment compatibility, then at the practical level, UnionPay Mobile Pay’s competitiveness lies more in high-frequency, essential scenarios. From a technical perspective, UnionPay Mobile Pay relies on NFC (Near Field Communication) technology, which boasts a near-disruptive efficiency advantage in specific scenarios. The most typical application is urban public transportation. Compared to QR code payments that rely on the network and require waking up the app and camera, NFC payments are more like a “wireless” extension—approach, identify, complete, the entire process often ending in milliseconds. It is reported that as of 2025, UnionPay Mobile Pay has covered subways in 46 cities across China and bus systems in 1760 prefecture-level cities (counties); overseas, more than 200 transportation merchants in over 10 countries and regions support UnionPay Mobile Pay card-tapping for gate access, covering five continents including Hong Kong MTR, New York MTR, and Rome public transportation. In high-concurrency scenarios such as rush hour and underground spaces, this “seamless payment” is quietly changing users’ expectations of payment efficiency. A global network ensures seamless use both domestically and internationally. The vitality of any payment tool ultimately depends on the breadth and depth of its acceptance network. Observing UnionPay’s internationalization process in recent years, it is clear that it has evolved from early single-point breakthroughs to a systematic “network,” allowing users to conveniently use the service both domestically and internationally. In recent years, UnionPay has continuously improved its global layout. While most card organizations still excel in overseas acceptance networks, UnionPay has built a more inclusive and continuous payment network through a parallel model of strong domestic penetration and rapid overseas expansion. Currently, UnionPay Mobile Pay is supported in more than 100 countries and regions overseas. At the same time, UnionPay International is promoting QR code interoperability in about 50 countries and regions, bringing tens of millions of merchants into its acceptance network, enabling users to enjoy a “one-phone-for-all” payment experience. It is also worth noting that compared with some international card organizations that only support specific mobile phones, another major advantage of UnionPay Mobile Pay is its high compatibility with mainstream mobile phone manufacturers. Whether it is Apple, Huawei, Xiaomi, OPPO, vivo, or Samsung, all can access UnionPay Mobile Pay. Furthermore, UnionPay Mobile Pay supports over 400 banks in mainland China, covering almost all bank cards, including all dual-branded card products. This means UnionPay Mobile Pay has a lower barrier to entry and a stronger network effect. This collaboration with Samsung Electronics further amplifies this advantage. As the world’s largest Android phone manufacturer, Samsung Wallet already covers 62 countries and regions; simultaneously, through deep collaboration with major local card issuers such as Bank of China (Hong Kong), UnionPay is building a closed-loop ecosystem integrating “terminal-card issuance-acceptance”. Moreover, UnionPay does not view internationalization as simply network expansion, but simultaneously introduces pricing and benefits mechanisms to cultivate usage habits—from exclusive exchange rate discounts in Hong Kong and Singapore, to instant discounts covering popular shopping districts, and the “Mobile Pay Cashback on Every Transaction” launched in conjunction with mainland banks, UnionPay transforms payment behavior into a long-term choice through clear and perceptible profit-sharing logic. Facing the AI era, accelerating intelligent evolution. Currently, the payment industry is at a critical juncture of transitioning from electronic to intelligent payment. Against this backdrop, UnionPay Mobile Pay’s strategic intent clearly goes beyond simply being an “electronic wallet”. UnionPay’s MCP payment service is committed to the deep integration of payment capabilities and intelligent applications, creating a new consumption model where users can “place orders with just one sentence,” and accelerating the application of AI payment in commercial scenarios. Simultaneously, addressing the differences in payment habits between domestic and international markets, UnionPay has also upgraded its PayByLink cross-border payment product, incorporating MCP functionality to achieve seamless interaction between AI models and the UnionPay payment system. This means that future mobile payments may no longer be perceived as a “wallet,” but rather will be lurking within map navigation, social applications, content platforms, and even metaverse scenarios, intelligently activated the moment a need arises. From the technological innovation of “card and code integration” to the global ecosystem layout, and then to forward-looking exploration towards the AI era, UnionPay mobile payments present not just the evolution of a single product, but a systematic solution for Chinese payment institutions to participate in global payment governance. As an important window for the opening up of China’s financial industry, UnionPay provides valuable “Chinese wisdom” for the global payment system in a more flexible and inclusive manner.
