China’s zero-tariff policy helps Benin pineapples expand into the Chinese market

Starting May 1, 2026, China will implement a zero-tariff policy on goods from 53 African countries; Benin’s pineapple industry views this as a significant opportunity to expand business, with the country’s "Sugarloaf" pineapples being highly sought after.

From May 1, 2026, China will implement a zero-tariff policy on goods from 53 African countries. This move brings great hope to African exporters.
In Benin, pineapple industry practitioners regard it as an important opportunity to expand their business and enter the vast market.

Benin Pineapple

Benin pineapple exporter Rodolfo Amotonou said in an exclusive interview: “First of all, we very much welcome this decision. This policy is a major benefit to us and greatly reduces our burden, especially in terms of raw material exports. Pineapples are very important to us.”
China’s exports have achieved zero tariffs.
At the same time, we have also noticed that with the implementation of the standardized invoice system, as long as you select the ‘export’ option when issuing an invoice, the 18% value-added tax and other taxes will be automatically reset to zero.”

He also mentioned that the Chinese market has reduced many restrictions for exporters.
In contrast, the EU market requires specific treatments for the fruit. These phytosanitary treatments, including coloring, are often necessary for entry into the EU market.
The Chinese market accepts 100% green pineapples in their natural state, freeing them from these complex restrictions and allowing them to sell products in the most natural state.

Benin Sweet Loaf Pineapple

Among many products, Benin’s “Sweet Loaf” pineapple stands out for its slender and unique shape and highly sweet milky white flesh, and is favored by the market.
This variety made its debut at the Shanghai International Import Expo in 2023 and quickly became a star product that attracted much attention.
Its unique taste and appearance have attracted the attention of many consumers and laid a good foundation for Benin pineapples to open up the Chinese market.

The zero-tariff policy implemented by China not only provides economic benefits to Benin pineapple exporters, but also creates a broader market space for them.
This will help the development of Benin’s pineapple industry, increase the income of local farmers and promote the growth of Benin’s economy.
At the same time, it also brings more high-quality imported fruit choices to Chinese consumers, enriching people’s lives.

With the continued advancement of policies, it is believed that more Benin pineapples will enter the Chinese market to meet Chinese consumers’ demand for high-quality fruits.
Beninese pineapple exporters will also take advantage of this policy to continuously improve product quality and service levels, further expand the Chinese market, and achieve a mutually beneficial and win-win situation.
